Social Media Video Editing: How to Edit for TikTok, Reels, Shorts, and LinkedIn

How to edit videos for TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and LinkedIn — aspect ratios, optimal length, caption style, and platform-specific hooks.

Every major platform has its own rules — and editing a video once and posting it everywhere is one of the fastest ways to get ignored on all of them. TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and LinkedIn each have different aspect ratios, optimal lengths, caption norms, and algorithm behaviors that reward platform-native content.

This guide breaks down how to edit for each platform. By the end, you'll understand exactly why most creators struggle to maintain quality output across multiple channels — and why a done-for-you editing subscription solves it.

TikTok: Hook-First, Fast-Paced, Vertical

Aspect ratio: 9:16 vertical. Optimal length: 21–34 seconds for entertainment; 60–90 seconds for educational content. Caption style: bold, high-contrast on-screen text, used to reinforce spoken words.

TikTok's algorithm rewards watch time and replays above all else. That means the first second of your video is the most important editing decision you'll make. The hook — the opening image, word, or statement — needs to stop a scroll immediately. Cut to the most interesting frame first, not the beginning. Use jump cuts to maintain energy. Silence kills TikTok videos: if you're pausing to think on camera, cut it.

On-screen captions are now standard. TikTok's native auto-captions are serviceable, but manually styled and timed captions — with emphasis on key words, color changes, and dynamic text animations — perform measurably better. They also make content accessible and watchable on mute, which 70%+ of viewers do.

Music selection matters. TikTok's sound-first culture means the right trending audio can dramatically boost reach. Build your edit around the beat, not over it.

Instagram Reels: Polished Vertical With a Visual Identity

Aspect ratio: 9:16 vertical (4:5 safe zone for feed crop). Optimal length: 15–30 seconds for broad reach; up to 60 seconds for niche audiences. Caption style: clean, consistent — often a branded lower-third or styled subtitle.

Instagram Reels reward polish and aesthetic consistency more than TikTok does. If TikTok is raw energy, Reels is curated energy.

Color grading matters more here. A consistent look across your Reels trains Instagram's algorithm and your audience to recognize your content in the feed. Flat, ungraded footage performs worse than a clean, deliberate visual treatment.

The first frame is still critical, but Reels also penalizes content that looks obviously repurposed from TikTok — particularly videos with TikTok watermarks or aspect ratios that bleed into the UI. Native, platform-specific uploads always outperform cross-posts.

Hooks on Reels should be visual as often as verbal. A dramatic cut, a before/after reveal, or a compelling text card in the first frame works just as well as a spoken opener.

YouTube Shorts: Topical, Clear, Repeatable

Aspect ratio: 9:16 vertical. Optimal length: 15–59 seconds. Caption style: auto-captions are standard; add manual emphasis for key phrases.

YouTube Shorts are a discovery tool, not just a content format. Shorts that perform well drive subscribers to the main channel, which is why the editing approach should be different from TikTok even when the content is similar.

Shorts reward topicality and clarity over virality. A Short that clearly answers a question or demonstrates a skill outperforms a Short that's just attention-grabbing. The algorithm surfaces Shorts to people who watch similar content on YouTube, so keyword-rich titles and clear visual content matter more here than on TikTok.

Loop optimization is unique to Shorts. If a Short loops seamlessly — ending on a visual that flows into the beginning — YouTube counts replays in its engagement calculation. Editing the end to feed back into the start is a small technique that meaningfully impacts performance.

LinkedIn: Professional, Value-First, Square or Vertical

Aspect ratio: 1:1 square or 4:5 vertical (16:9 works but underperforms). Optimal length: 30–90 seconds. Caption style: full captions — nearly all LinkedIn video is watched on mute in professional environments.

LinkedIn is the outlier. The algorithm rewards content that generates comments and saves over pure watch time, which means the editing goal is different: communicate clearly, provide immediate value, and give people a reason to save or share.

Heavy jump cutting reads as too informal for most LinkedIn audiences. A slower, more deliberate pacing with b-roll that reinforces the spoken point works better. Captions here aren't optional — LinkedIn is a silent scroll platform.

Avoid trending audio. LinkedIn doesn't have a sound culture like TikTok does, and music that works on Reels often feels out of place on LinkedIn. Clean, minimal audio design is the right call.

The Real Problem: Platform Multiplication

Four platforms. Four aspect ratios. Four optimal lengths. Four caption styles. Four sets of algorithmic best practices.

Now multiply that by your publishing frequency. If you're posting three times per week per platform, you're managing 12 edits weekly — each one requiring platform-specific decisions, custom captions, and format adjustments. That's not a content strategy. That's a full-time editing operation.

Most creators handle this one of two ways: they post the same video everywhere (and accept worse performance), or they spend every free hour editing (and accept burnout). There's a third option.

EditFlow Starter ($299/mo) handles short-form editing across all platforms — TikTok, Reels, Shorts, LinkedIn — with platform-native formatting, 24-hour turnaround, unlimited revisions, and captions included. You upload the raw footage. We deliver ready-to-post videos, already formatted for each channel. See plan details at /pricing and finished examples at /work.

Stop reformatting. Stop guessing on captions. Stop losing hours to exports and aspect ratio adjustments. Let the editing happen while you focus on what actually grows the channel: showing up, creating, and building an audience.
